The first race of the season for ACT Triathletes was held on Saturday 17th September at Stromlo Forrest Park by Canberra Multisport Events (CME), and it didn’t disappoint.
The run course is set on the famous Robert de Castella Cross Country running track, that is a dedicated 2.5km manicured grass running track, and an undulating bike leg around bordering streets of Stromlo Forrest Park. This is a fast course in good weather, but an icy cold front rolled in at the start of the race, that saw competitors face bone chilling high head winds, sleet rain, periods of sunshine and warmth and a whole lot of grit and determination.
With a good showing from all local clubs, the field was diverse and colourful.
The unfavourable weather conditions didn’t slow the field of ACT athlete’s down, with Jarrod Osborne (51.33) from JT Multisport taking out the male overall winner, and Keira Germech (1:04.37) from Bilbys claiming overall female winner.
Noticeable mention to M10-13yrs racer Will Astridge (25.33) with an overall win in the Super Sprint, with Oliver Noble and Micah Wade right on his tail.
Canberra's newest club, Canberra Junior Triathlon Club had a great showing - with a solid field of young athletes competing in the Ultra Sprint. IN such challenging environmental conditions, the performances from the next generation of athletes were truly inspiring.
I would like to congratulate all the age winners and other competitors; it goes to show the level of talent and mental/physical robustness that can make up an ACT Triathlete. Lastly thankyou to Corey Bacon and his army of volunteers on the day - we wouldn’t have local races without the tireless work that goes behind the scenes.
