2016 Cozumel ITU Age Group Sprint World Championship

ITU World Cup Cozumel

It’s one race down and two to go for Age Groupers at the 2016 ITU Age Group World Championships Cozumel, after Australia picked up three Gold, one Silver and four Bronze medals in the Aquathlon World Championships on Wednesday, 14 September.

On Thursday 15 September, 103 of Australia’s 214 athletes will compete in the Sprint World Championships as part of Australia’s Age Group team. The 2016 race will be the first time age group athletes will compete at World Championships in a draft legal format.

Queensland athletes Barry Meek, Clive Tucker, Penny Hearn and Maddie Morton will be competing in their second of three events, while Greg Lebeter will be racing in his final event at the World Championships after finishing 6th in yesterday’s Aquathlon World Championships. Lebeter is looking forward to putting his brand new PROJECT ONE TREK race machine to use in the Sprint after winning Yellow Jersey Bike Shop’s dream bike competition ahead of his World’s campaign.

Barry Meek, current Australian Sprint Champion (70-74 M) who finished 4th in the Aquathlon World Championships and Penny Hearn, current Queensland Sprint Champion (60-64 F) who picked up Bronze in the Aquathlon World Championship will be hungry for a podium finish and to get a World Champion Title under their race belts.

The course
Cozumel’s Sprint course consists of one 750m lap in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, 20km draft legal bike leg in an out and back course on the island highway towards south Cozumel and a one lap 5km run on the FONATUR marina/ Triathlon park and city streets. The course is flat with a paved surface, will have full road closures and excellent conditions for draft legal racing.
