Triathlon WA is excited to announce a revamped state series for the 2015-16 triathlon season.
A review of the existing series uncovered opportunities for change that would increase the profile of WA’s premier triathlon events – the State Championship races.
With more than $17,000 in awards and prize money up for grabs, the inaugural State Championship Series is set to attract WA’s best Open and Age-Group triathletes.
Triathlon WA Executive Director, Peter Minchin, said one of the driving forces for change was to continue to improve the quality of competition in Western Australia.
“By their very nature, the State Championship races attract a large field of participants, however the revamp is designed to give our flagship races an identity that sets them apart from the others,” said Minchin.
“When we reviewed the 2014-15 State Series we found that a relatively small percentage of members race more than four of the nine State Series races."
“Improving our focus and offering a higher quality of competition for our athletes will allow us to build the profile of these events and ultimately the sport overall,” said Minchin.
The races that will form the State Championship Series for Open and Age Group Athletes include:
- Duathlon – City of Armadale Duathlon (Australian Duathlon Championship), 4 October 2015
- Sprint – SunSmart Triathlon Series Race 1 (Hillarys), 13 December 2015
- Standard – SunSmart Triathlon Series Race 3 (Busselton), 31 January 2016
- Long Course – SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton, 1 May 2016
Results from the State Championship Series will determine the TWA Triathlete of the Year. To be eligible for the TWA Triathlete of the Year, Triathlon WA members must race a minimum of two State Championship races, with their best three race results counting towards the Triathlete of the Year award. The Junior State Series will be based on a 5 race series. The full Awards Policy and details of the Junior State Series can be found here.
Equally exciting is the release of the 2015-16 WA Race Calendar which will see the season commence with the Australian Duathlon Championships (also State Championship race) in October and run all the way through to IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton on the 1st May 2016.
“Last year there were in excess of 22,000 race starts and we’re looking forward to improving on that this season as more West Australians discover the benefits to being involved in triathlon,” said Minchin.
Membership for the 2015-16 season is now on sale. To reap the full benefits of being involved in triathlon, and to be eligible for Triathlete of the Year, become a member of the Triathlon WA family today here.
