This Sunday is the Senior State Sprint Championship which will take place at the SunSmart Triathlon Series Race 1 Hillarys, hosted by TriEvents. This event is the second race in the Senior State Championship series and the first for the Junior State Series. TWA members accrue points from the series races which go towards the Triathlete of The Year Awards.
Cooler conditions are expected for the weekend but the windy morning could play well into the stronger cyclist’s hands. Athletes will enjoy a picturesque coastal course consisting of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. Over 1300 athletes will take to the start line in the first race of the SunSmart Triathlon Series.
The State Sprint Championships is up for the taking, with neither of the 2014 men’s nor women’s champion returning to defend their title. In the men’s field, a number of the State Sprint age group winners from last year have made the move to race Open, including Alex Martin(Exceed Tri Club), Lindsay Bennett(North Coast Tri Club (20-24)) and David Bryant(Stadium Tri Club(25-29)). Bryant has some form on the board after winning the 25-29 age group in the State Duathlon Championship in October along with 4th at SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Mandurah in November. Brynt will be up against the young guns of Oli Stenning and Brandon Swift who placed 2nd and 4th respectively at the State Duathlon Championships this year.
In the women’s field, Tegan Scott(North Coast Tri Club) and Alise Farrelly(North Coast Tri Club) will again both be towing the line following their respective 5th and 3rd performances at the State Duathlon Championship. They will be joined by Liz Bellis(UWA Tri Club), who won the 20-24 age group Sprint Championship last year.
In the age group race, nearly all the female winners from last year have are back to defend their titles. This includes Janet Ferguson (Fremantle Tri Club) who swept the pools last year, taking out the Dualthon, Sprint, Standard and Long Course distances and Triathlete of the Year for the 50-54 Age Group. She has already taken out the Duathlon for this season and will look to continue her run on Sunday.
In the men’s age group race, it seems the older you are the more consistent you get, with all last year’s winners from the 50-54 age group and up returning to defend their titles.
