This weekend saw the State Sprint Championship decided as part of the SunSmart Triathlon Series race 1 Hillarys, hosted by TriEvents. It was also the second race of the State Championship Series for seniors and the first race for the Junior State Series. It was great to see such strong male and female Open fields taking the start line and the racing did not disappoint.
In the men’s open race, Alex Martin, Brandon Swift, James Lewin and Oli Stenning were the first group to hit the sand. Swift showed his speed with transition and led the group out onto the 3 lap, 20km ride. The strong south-westerly favoured the stronger cyclists and provided a strong headwind coming back to transition. David Bryant had the fastest bike split of the day but had missed the front pack of swimmers who were already 2 minutes up the road. Stenning, known for his cycling ability, powered on the bike, breaking away from the bunch and coming into T2 with over a minute lead. As he headed out onto the run, he needed all that lead to hold off the fast finishing Rhine and Dimmer. Stenning was able to hold on to his lead to take the State Sprint Championships and the Brynt McSwain Memorial Trophy in a time of 59:56:23. Jason Rhine finished in second in a time of 1:00:28.73 and Bendon Dimmer rounded out the podium with a 1:00:57.69.
In the women’s field it was one of the strongest field we have seen for a while and provided some very exciting racing. Liz Bellis showed her swimming pedigree, leading the field out of the swim by over a minute, recording one of only two sub-10 minute swims for the day. She was followed out by Aleisha Wesley, Alise Farrelly and Kerry Mulholland in a tight group. Bellis paid the price of the strong swim and was quickly passed on the bike as Farrelly, Wesley and Mullholland pushed hard up the road and came into T2 together. Wesley dominated T2 to take the lead onto the run but Katey Gibb showed her experience and form and quickly moved up the field. Gibb recorded the fastest run split in the field, taking the title in 1:05:50.11 from Alise Farrelly (1:06:12.46) in second and Kerry Mulholland, in her first open race, finishingthird in a time of 1:06:38.71.
