Congratulations to all the competitors in the SunSmart Triathlon Series Race 2 at Rockingham, hosted by Trievents. As well as having a draft legal event for the Open Competitors it was also Race 2 for the Junior State Series, with points accumulating in the TWA Junior Triathlete of the Year.
In the men’s open race there was some tight racing amongst some of our young guns, with Liam McCoach(Break Your Limits), Kurt Wesley(North Coast Tri Club) and Luke Bate(UWA Triathlon Club), fighting it out over the entire course. The boys came out of the swim together trailing Alex Martin(Exceed Triathlon Club) and Samuel Lade(UWA Tri Club). They headed out onto the draft legal bike course and quickly formed a pack of 5 with Sam and Alex . The group styed away over the ride and came into T2 together, before Liam showed his running class by pulling away early in the run to take it out from Kurt and Luke.
In the women’s race, youngster Jessica Claxton(NCTC) followed up some great racing at last weekend’s Australian Junior Triathlon Series race on the Gold Coast, with a strong swim, being first women out of the water with Aleisha Wesley(NCTC) hot on her heels. They headed out onto the bike together while the group of Katey Gibb(Exceed Tri Club), Kerry Mulholland(Stadium Tri-Club) and Abby Owendyk(Fremantle Triathlon Club) caught the lead pair on the 3rd lap. The group of 5 came into T2 together and Katie and Jessica sprinted out of transition with a slight lead. Katie showed her running strength to pull away from Jessica over the 5km course and take the race out by almost 2 minutes from Jessica and a fast finishing Kerry Mulholland.
In the Junior State Series, Cooper Foxcroft (BYL) took out the 12-13 year age group from Daniel Kempson and Matthew Wesley (NCTC). Bianca Petite (Fremantle TC) took out the girls’ age group from Taylor Kroyer (BYL) and Grace Lenaghan.
