Ryan Bailie has capped off a stellar season with a sixth place at the ITU World Championships in Cozumel on the weekend. In a race that finished in dramatic fashion, Ryan showed that his dedication and commitment has paid off, as he continues to be one of Australia's most consistent racers. The result in Cozumel placed him 6th overall in the ITU World Championship Series and the top ranked Australian male triathlete.
In Cozumel, Ryan had put himself very much in the race, despite finishing further back in the swim than he would have liked. He missed the front group on the bike that included team mate and fellow Olympian Aaron Royle but rode strongly to put himself in a position to attack on the run alongside two of the best runners in the game in Mario Mola(ESP) and Richard Murray(SA).
Ryan looked right at home as he went stride for stride and kilometre for kilometre, not knowing what would transpire just 200 metres from the finish line.
“There is no doubt in my mind after what I have seen this year and especially again today that Ryan Bailie has the best to come over the next four years,” said outgoing National Performance Director Bernard Savage.
“He matched it with the best runners in the sport today and looked right at home alongside the likes of Mola and Murray.
“He is consistently getting better and that’s the secret and he has prepared himself very well and looked like he belonged.”
From his early days with Bunbury Triathlon Club and the TWA Triathlon Excellence Program, Ryan has continued to push himself. He has worked through the ranks to this year make the Australian Olympic Team, finishing 9th, have 5 top 10 finishes in the ITU World Championship Series and be the top ranked Australian male in the ITU rankings and has also taken out the TWA Indivdual Performance of the Year.
