Last weekend the 2016/2017 Season kicked off in earnest with the City of Armadale Duathlon at Champion Lakes, hosted by TriEvents. The race was the Australia National Duathlon Championships as well as the State Duathlon Championships. It was also race 1 of 5 of the Triathlete of the Year Series, with valuable points on offer.
In cold and windy conditions, a strong field toed the start line in the Open category, including Olympian, Ryan Bailie in his first race back in WA since the Olympics. He was joined by last year’s National title holders Thomas Bruins and Katey Gibb, as well as a number of regular Open athletes and some junior athletes taking the step up.
In the first run, a group of 4 athletes, including Ryan Bailie, Matt Smith, Brandon Swift and young gun Luke Bate made a breakaway, heading Thomas Bruins by 5 seconds into T1, with Matt Burton almost a minute behind.
Fighting a strong headwind on the bike leg, Matt Burton put the power down to have the best bike split of the day and come into T2 first, with Bailie hot on his heels. In the second run leg, Bailie showed his class, pulling away to cross the finish line first. Burton showed an improved run leg to come in just 10 seconds behind Bailie with Thomas Bruins rounding out the placing’s in third.
In the women’s race, Katey Gibb showed why she is the 3 time defending champion, leading the race from start to finish. Second in the Open category was Kirby Diaz, 3 minutes back on Gibb with Rosie Farrell taking out third. But showing the strength of more mature female athletes, Janet Ferguson (55-59 category) was third fastest across the line followed by Caroline Anderson(50-54) in fourth.
