A Busy Month for TNSW Coach & Pathway Manager, Mick Delamotte

Season 2020/2021 has had so many unknowns for our entire community, so when the wonderful news came through that NSW Health were removing restrictions around inter-regional movement, it was all systems go for the Triathlon NSW staff to get out into the community and develop triathlon. We sat down with TNSW Coach and Pathway Manager, Mick Delamotte, after a productive and busy month to gain an insight his projects over the past month.

Mick explains, ‘I set my sights firmly on supporting our newly selected ROSTA (Rest of State Talent Academy) athletes, and wanted to take advantage of there being limited Interstate travel for our NSW based athletes. I also wanted to get out to the Central West of our state to support the region and run a Foundation Coaching Course. Whilst all regions are vital for the sport of Triathlon, I spent some time in the Central West due to the quantity and quality of juniors the region has in the our TNSW Pathway Program and the booming demand from local schools and affiliated clubs.'

Taking full advantage of the school holidays, Mick started the month with a clinic at Heffron Park, Maroubra to fast track the cycling skills of our Sydney based ROSTA athletes for endorsement and profiling requirements, in order to compete in draft legal events. This was especially important with the impending launch of the Billigence Pathway Championships series. This was a wonderful 4-hour clinic with 2 pathway coaches and 17 athletes in attendance.

After this, it was straight to Bathurst to assess a coaching session with Bathurst local Luke Gilmer. Luke signed up for our Development coaching course but due to COVID restrictions we were unable to offer our practical coaching components as a group. Mick headed to Bathurst to provide an assessment in a real group environment.

Not wanting to miss the opportunity, Mick headed over to the triathlon hub of Orange and checked out the newly laid cycling track out at Gosling Reserve. This awesome development is thanks to Orange Triathlon Club and their ability to engage local and state funding. Given this is the venue for the State Super Sprint and Mixed Team Relay Championships, the new track will be pivotal to continuing to offer vital draft legal experience for our juniors, who have their sights firmly focussed on the Paris Olympics in 2024 and beyond.

Still out in Orange, Saturday saw Mick put some keen locals through the Foundation Coaching Couse, with the benefit of a few Orange Tri Club Juniors. Any opportunity to expose regional athletes to professional development is a positive for the sport, and creates a lasting benefit to all athletes across the Central West.

To maximise the benefit of the visit, Sunday and Monday saw more clinics for both our local ROSTA & Emerging Talent Squad athletes. It also saw a few Sydney siders make the trip for the weekend. Swim & Bike skills were the focus of the sessions, along with meetings with our local Pathway coaches afterwards to provide further engagement, which topped off a productive couple of days.

Mick's final commitment was a Tuesday morning meeting with the local Orange Cycling & Triathlon Club committee members to finalise some logistics for the race weekend in November. A huge thanks to Phil Tudor and the crew from OCTC who do a tremendous job all year and are great supporters of our Pathway initiatives and the sport in general in the region.

Last but certainly not least, Mick had a meeting with the Western Region Academy of Sport, who will come back onboard next season after a few years without a dedicated triathlon program. This is exciting for the region moving forward. On the way out of Bathurst, a quick detour into the local Aquatic Centre gave Mick a chance to work with the Head Swim Coach of the pool, Josh Stapley, who himself is a Triathlete and has a few potential champions lurking in the wings.

Keep an eye out for more staff updates!
