Inspire 2 Tri (I2T) Program: Removing Barriers for Aspiring Female Coaches

Coach Course 5

Last month, Triathlon NSW conducted a NSW Foundation Coach Training Program and Part One of the NSW Development Coach Training Program on the Central Coast. The courses were open to both male & female candidates, with the strong female representation the highlight, thanks to the Inspire 2 Tri (I2T) program funding.

The Inspire 2 Tri (I2T) program was developed by Triathlon NSW to Inspire the Next Generation of female coaches in NSW, and is funded through the NSW Office Of Sport, Her Sport Her Way grant program.

The Leadership & Mentoring program is designed to empower and support females to take the leap into triathlon coaching, and progress through the coaching pathway - where it aims to balance the gender representation in coaching, particularly in the higher coaching levels where female representation dramatically declines.

In April, we launched the second year of the Inspire 2 Tri (I2T) program. We have addressed some of the barriers to progression that were identified within the group and gained an understanding the Australian History of Women in Sport and the social context behind it. The program included online sessions, which were run by NSW Female Performance Coaches who have supported the progression of coaches through the process, as mentors and role models. Other successful coaches and athletes joined in some of the sessions as guest speakers, to further inspire and educate the cohort, whilst sharing their experiences with the group.

Mingara Recreation Centre hosted the Face to Face deliverables of both the Foundation and Development Course practicals, where nine (9) new female Foundation Coaches completed the practical component of the course, successfully fulfilling accreditation requirements for this level. Six (6) females progressed from a Foundation to a Development Coach and will continue with ongoing mentoring and support to assist the coaches in their final assessments required to attain accreditation for this level. Triathlon NSW also delivered a North and South Inspire to Tri Foundation Course in Coffs Harbour and Batemans Bay to further the accessibility of the program to more females.

  • The inaugural intake of Development Coaches last year increased female Development coaches in NSW from 23% to 31% . Year two will bring the female contingent of Development Level coaches to 45% - that is almost a 50% increase in female Development Coaches in NSW in two (2) years!
  • The Foundation level is almost gender balanced in NSW with 46 % being female.
  • The Performance Level is still very male dominant with 75% being male and TEN (10) Female Performance Coaches in NSW.

As an exciting side note, the Development Coaches took part in a World Record Attempt at Mingara on Sunday 21st May. The attempt was to be part of the biggest Aqua Aerobics class – needing 270 participants for 30 minutes of continuous exercise – and we were a part of breaking the WORLD RECORD with 282 people!!
