LET’S TALK TECHNICAL: 2022/23 SEASON WRAP

What a season! Fifty-four Triathlon Australia Technical Officials (TOs) officiated at sanctioned multi-sport events in NSW over the 2022-23 season. They worked both behind the scenes before the event and face to face to keep our races safe and fair.

So, let’s break these numbers down a bit further. We had 42 Triathlon NSW officials attend 35 sanctioned events this season. Some were available for a couple while others did up to fourteen events! Our team members travelled to events all over NSW, from Crackenback in the south and Kingscliff up north, to the famous Hillston Triathlon out west (definitely google where that one is). We officiated children to adults, first timers to elites, and super-sprints to IRONMAN distances. Sometimes our team was just one person while at IM Australia we had a team of twenty officials.

During the season, 13 aspiring officials commenced the Local Technical Official training course, either online or at a face-to-face session, and 7 of them have already been accredited, while the rest will complete their practical component early next season.

Twelve interstate officials travelled to NSW to experience our NSW events whilst seven NSW officials headed to events in Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania to further develop their skills. Two of our team were appointed to senior teams at World Triathlon events in Australia and New Zealand whilst another one worked on the IRONMAN Kona technical team this year. We were very proud of one of our team who was selected to officiate at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Development of our officials is an important part of their growth. Five of our ‘younger’ officials got their first opportunity in a senior role, giving them an insight to the pathways ahead. Most of our officials participate in a mentee/mentor relationship so they have someone to chat with and discuss their journey.

Regular newsletters keep them up to date on what’s happening as well as reminders of safe behaviour. Our Annual Forum in January recognised the contributions of some of our senior officials with years of service awards ranging from five to twenty-five years. The Forum was privileged to hear insights from our guest speaker, leading NRL Referee, Gerard Sutton, who spoke of his journey to the top and the importance of effective communication and teamwork.

2022-23 season is over now but we are already planning and looking forward to a fantastic 2023-24!

Don’t forget to say g’day to an official at your next race.

It’s the best seat in the house!
