Message from the CEO: July 2021

To the Triathlon Community of NSW,

I write this open letter to you all in response to the latest COVID-19 crisis confronting us all.

At times like these, it’s easy to focus on negatives. Social relationships changes, interaction with friends and extended family changes and it’s difficult to remain positive.

Each of our 5,100 members will be impacted in some way, as will our 59 clubs and their dedicated volunteers, in addition to our commercial race directors and their staff, who rely on our sport for their livelihood.

But I want to communicate some positive thoughts for the community regarding our current situation.

As triathletes, we will always be allowed to put on our running shoes and exercise in our local area. We are still allowed to jump on our bikes and go for a ride, enjoying the great outdoors, and for those fortunate enough to live near the ocean, swimming can still occur and is a wonderful respite from the reality of working from home.  COVID-19 will never take that away from us.

With positive thoughts at front of mind, we know that the next few months will be incredibly tough for lots of our members.  We have done this before and survived. And together, we know we can do it again. We know that, in time, events will return to both clubs and commercial operators. We will come together again, as a community and as sport, and celebrate the good times and the friendships that bind us.

Whilst events are in hiatus, the Triathlon NSW staff are busy working hard behind the scenes, getting prepared to ‘hit the ground running’. We continue to engage and support with our Race Director Partners, and work is being done to prepare for the fourth year of the Forager Interclub Leagues. We are busy working with clubs and keeping them up to date with the latest COVID-19 information, speaking to NSW Government about the sport and what’s required for our return and continuing to roll out and education our clubs and their volunteers about the new database.

I wanted to finish with two more comments. Firstly, for commercial race directors, the next few months will be incredibly tough. They will have to make some tough decisions, standing down staff and postponing events. Remember, they run events for profit, but are just as passionate and love the sport as much as you do.  With this in mind, I encourage you to exercise tolerance and acceptance in your dealings with your club’s committee and our commercial race directors. Please remember that our common aim is to ensure that our events provide a safe and inclusive environment for all stakeholders.

Secondly, I want to thank the 35% of NSW based members who have returned and re-joined for season 2021/2022. Without membership, we don’t have a reason to exist. And our reason for existing as an organisation is to support our clubs.

For those not yet to re-join or those unsure if it’s worthwhile, please consider it because now, the sport needs your membership more than ever to survive and flourish in the future.

A range of new membership offerings are in the marketplace, catering to everyone’s different requirements and desires. I encourage you to take some to have a look: Triathlon Australia Membership

Irrespective of whether you make the decision to join or re-join, we hope your family stays safe during this difficult and unprecedented time. And we hope to see you on a start line in NSW or Australia shortly.
