New Club Profile: Macksville Triathlon Club

Last season, five new clubs join Triathlon NSW’s family, expanding our footprint and profile across New South Wales.

We are now happy to present you to our newest club, the Macksville Cycle and Triathlon Club. They join the Goulburn Triathlon Club who have also affiliated in season 2023/2024.

This great new club, located up in the North Coast of NSW, was born from a community of local cyclists, who run the local AusCycling Affiliated Club who branched out with some cross training in swimming and running.

With the goal of creating a united and friendly community of triathletes that is affordable and does not come with any pressure to do anything crazy (unless they want to!), the club is initially focused on connecting with other interested locals.

For a few members, it’s the Port Macquarie’s Ironman Australia & 70.3 in May 2024 that is their main goal, but hey are steadfast in their desire to encourage a variety of ages & abilities and get more people involved in training together, as well as racing together. They are proud to confirm that they encourage anyone to join their club.

Inaugural President of the club Peter Joyce added “for the North Coast Interclub League, we’ve decided to go with ‘Macksville Wolves’ because the wolf is ranked number 3 in the animal endurance world. They are a stealth animal, happy to work in packs or do the hard work solo. We feel the wolf resembles our club's triathlon style of comradery and racing”.

The sport has a long history in Macksville, which Peter was proud to provide us further details on.

“The cycling club has been around since 1955, but between 1994-2003 some of their long term members ran a local triathlon, with the swim in the ‘bull shark infested’ river and the ride along most of the course that we ride on weekly. Our members have also helped out with other tri’s in the mid-coast area. Its tough to get new events going but we have a history of running cycling events over the last 10 years so hopefully we can get a multi-discipline event up and going. Lately we have been organizing gravel based rides, so maybe something a bit left of field”.

The club is super eager to welcome new people along and while they don’t mind a bit of racing, the long-term club moto is “we race for cake”.

Because there is always an opportunity to carb and caffeine load at the end of racing to keep that inner wolf going!
