In the sandy streets of Bribie Island, near Brisbane, a dedicated group of budding triathletes have just completed their Weet-Bix Kids TRYstars kids triathlon program with the help of Sporting Schools. Twenty TRYstars completed their swim, bike and run training throughout Term 3 and put their new skills to test in the inaugural Banksia Beach Aquathlon.

Program Coordinator and Banksia Beach State School teacher, Mr Stephen Fern, told Triathlon Queensland the students were eager to complete their first aquathlon and are now very keen to compete at local triathlon events held in the region.

Stephen said, “TRYstars has given our students a fun experience that will encourage them to stay active, while providing the skills they can use for a future in sport, not just triathlon. We are keen to continue the program in coming years, to expand our Aquathlon event and prepare our students to race in the Bribie Island Triathlon and the Triathlon Queensland All Schools Triathlon.”

The program teaches children fundamental movement skills, while teaching them the basic skills required for triathlon. Students are able to join their friends in the pool or on the track, developing their skills, as well as learning how to safely manoeuvre a bike.

Triathlon is one of 32 sports which is offered nationally under the Australian Sports Commission’s Sporting Schools initiative, delivering sporting programs to primary school aged children.

Triathlon Australia Participation Programs Coordinator, Tracy Doherty said “The opportunity to be a part of Sporting Schools allows for triathlon to be experienced on a much wider scale to children all over Australia. This is invaluable as we look to share the fun and satisfaction of being a part of the sport".
