Townsville Tri Festival has announced revised dates for the 2016 event and will now come under the 2016/17 triathlon season.

Townsville Tri Festival, previously scheduled to be held on the 28th - 29th June, has been rescheduled to the 20th – 21st August, 2016. The decision to move the date was made in the best interest of the national event calendar and access for triathletes, with the previous date falling just two weeks after Ironman Cairns.

Under the previous date, the Townsville Tri Festival was included in the North Queensland Triathlon Series as the final event, for members to earn points, including the North Queensland Triathlon Series presentations. Due to the change in circumstances the Townsville Tri Festival will no longer be included in the 2015/16 North Queensland Triathlon Season and the final event for the North Queensland Triathlon Series will be the Emerald Triathlon on the 30th April, 2016.

Presentations of the Age Group Champions from the 2015/16 North Queensland Triathlon Series will be awarded at the Townsville Tri Festival, which will also host the inaugural Triathlon Queensland Club Championships – North Queensland, an event Triathlon Queensland anticipates will be a highlight for many clubs and members in North Queensland.

Triathlon Queensland Executive Director, Tim Harradine said “The state is experiencing unprecedented growth in North Queensland and regional areas, which will see a shift to improving regional capacity to run multiple club events for members on a regional basis across the state.” Following ongoing feedback and consultation with clubs in North Queensland, Triathlon Queensland will review the format of the North Queensland Triathlon Series taking into account the unique challenges faced by North Queensland members.
