North and Central Queensland triathlon clubs will go head to head contesting the title of Club Champion – North Queensland, over Townsville Tri Festival’s The Big Weekend.

The announcement of The Big Weekend for the Intersport Townsville Triathlon Festival, is big news for triathlon in Queensland. The Townsville event, in its 14th year, has cemented its position on the national calendar and will this year hold the inaugural Triathlon Queensland Club Championships – North Queensland, the first of its kind in the top end of Queensland.

With a strong community connection and unique package offers for racing across the entire weekend and entertainment, including the crowd favourite ‘Carbs with the Stars’ and tickets to the North Queensland Cowboys game, Triathlon Queensland believe the event is a great platform to launch Club Championships – North Queensland and will set the perfect scene and festive atmosphere for a club championships event.

Triathlon Queensland affiliated clubs and their members based west and north of Bargara will be eligible to compete and earn points in the Club Championships – North Queensland over five events; Kids Try, Sprint Tri, Super Sprint Tri, Tri4Women and Team Relay Tri.

The decision to partner with Townsville Tri Festival as hosts of the ‘Triathlon Queensland Club Championships – North Queensland’ comes after careful consideration and consultation with Triathlon Queensland affiliated clubs based in north and central Queensland who currently take part in Triathlon Queensland’s North Queensland Triathlon Series. In its existing format, the North Queensland Triathlon Series incorporates events from Yeppoon to Cairns and west to Mt Isa, and while offering a great range of events, the geographic span of the sunshine state poses onerous travel commitments for members to partake in multiple events.

Triathlon Queensland Executive Director, Tim Harradine said “The state is experiencing unprecedented growth in North Queensland and regional areas, which will see a shift to improving regional capacity to run multiple club events for members, making a one-off Club Championship a more suitable model.”

“While a one-off Club Championship event is logistically more appealing to clubs and members, we also hope it will culminate in a highlight of the triathlon season, a celebration of the strength of the triathlon community and provide greater opportunities for clubs to establish their presence in Queensland and invite new athletes to the sport.”
