On March 26th, 19 young Varsity College - Junior School students will line up at the Kingscliff Triathlon, ready to put their new-found triathlon skills to the test.

 

Having worked their way through a 10 week triathlon program, supported by Sporting Schools funding, these kids are ready to fly.

 

Sporting Schools funding is a $160 Million Australian Government initiative to support kids participation in sport.  The Sports Commission partners with organisations like Triathlon Queensland to link accredited coaches to local schools.

 

Local accredited coach Jenny Barwick from A Body 2 Fit has been leading multiple groups of 20 year four to six kids in a structured skills program through the local primary school, Varsity College.  "We took the kids through a program of swimming, cycling and running.  Because of the heat three to four weeks ago, we hired out the pool at Pizzey Park" to help their training.  "It was good to throw swimming into the mix" as Varsity doesn't have it's own pool.

 

About half of the training was based at the school, and the other half at Miami Swimming Pool.

 

For Varsity College, "Sporting schools have given us the amazing opportunity to introduce triathlon training. Our students are fit, energized and have loved the three components of training in the swim, run and ride!" sais HPE teacher, Lara Moeckel.  "A Body 2 Fit (Jenny Barwick) has implemented and offered the training to  close to 100 students and the students have raised their fitness levels. We aim to keep a fit triathlon culture at Varsity College!"

 

These juniors are now ready and keen to line up at the Kingscliff Triathlon later this month.  With races to suit all athletes and aspiring athletes aged 7 and over, Kingscliff draws in a large junior contingent.
