Queenslanders cross the border for World Champs at Snowy Mountains

Australia’s spectacular Snowy Mountains in NSW, with its rugged mountain ranges and iconic Australian history is ready to welcome the world’s best at the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships this weekend.

Located in the heart of Australia’s high county and starting at an altitude of 1100m with Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciusko as the backdrop, this course will both delight and challenge athletes of all levels. The course includes some of the best fast and flowing single track mountain bike trails, and gritty off road running trails found anywhere in Australia.

228 Age Group athletes will be competing for Australia over the weekend, with 76 Queensland athletes making the trip to the Snowy Mountains, among them 2015-16 Cross Triathlon Australian Champions; Maddison Andrews (20-24), George Tamblyn, Leela Hancox (35-39), Christa Evans (45-49), Ian Martin (50-54), Jenny Alcorn (55-59) and Bardie Gruber (65-69). 2016 Queensland Age Group Champions Dean Cane, Georgia Silvestri and Callum Kingston will also step up to race in the Elite Junior U19 category this weekend.

Swim
The water temperature during November in Lake Crackenback is likely to be between 16 and 20 degrees which means that a wetsuit-optional swim is likely.

Bike
The course comprises approx 80% grippy, flowing single track. It also includes rocky paths, bridges, rock gardens and creek crossings which will require some technical skills to tackle effectively.
The trails will advantage both technically skilled riders who will be able to carry speed through the tight terrain but strong riders will be able to make up time grinding out the open sections with small pitches and hills.

Run
This course is a true trail run where runners will go off road, traverse the banks of the Little Thredbo River and the Snowy Mountains before heading for the finish line. The trail run includes a few surprises and challenges including creek crossings, a river run, suspension bridge, obstacles, rock scrambles and some true off road terrain.
Although there are no mammoth hills there are constant short, pinchy climbs and descents which will keep runners on their toes.
