Steph Gilmore spent the day with over 1,000  aspiring athletes on the Gold Coast and Brisbane launching the upcoming Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlons.  Steph received a welcome fit for a TRY Hero from Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School and Banksia Beach State School, with plenty of enthusiastic kids keen to show off their finisher medals and get t-shirts signed.

Steph's message 'Get out there and have a go' resonated with teachers and students at both schools who have been participating in Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYstars programs.

Speaking about the value of sports in everyday life, Steph talked with the children about how she got into surfing, and how she took that passion and made it a career. "I went into my first competition when I was 11 years old and I came third last.  It made me want to do better."  Crediting her father for giving her a start in surfing by taking her to the beach so he could have a surf, Steph says "nothing in life is guaranteed, sport teaches you about getting back up".

"The times I am most successful is when I am having the most fun".

Emily Moore, student at Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School, reflected on Steph's message "getting involved, participating and having a go is what matters the most".

At Banksia Beach, Banksia's budding TRYstars were ready to show the six time World Champion their tri skills, taking on Steph with a transition challenge.

Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlons will be held on the Gold Coast, North Brisbane and Townsville this May.  Schools that enter 15 or more athletes go into the draw to win $5,000 cash for their school.
