When Ringwood father of now 13-year-old Holly and 10-year-old Caitlyn, Greg Waite took his two daughters to Ringwood Triathlon Club for a come and try day for himself several years ago, he never imagined it would open up a whole new world of sport and community to his family.
Now, several years later and fresh from competing in the 5km fun run at the Noosa Triathlon, Holly and Caitlyn are ready to combine their three of favourite sports once again as they return to Ringwood for their second year of the Ringwood Triathlon Club TRYstars program this week.
“[At the start], they watched from the sides, and then as I took the kids down [to training], the other parents starting bringing their kids down, and then the kids starting joining in. When they saw the kids racing at [local races], they decided they wanted to do it as well," Greg said.
One of the biggest highlights of the program for Greg is seeing his daughters set goals from themselves, and find people within their own community to take inspiration from.
“There’s young girls at the club that the girls’ idolise, and it’s given them local heroes…local people that they look up to," Greg said.
“One of the best things about TRYstars is that it gives the kids a goal to work towards.”
“It’s given them goals, and the aim is to keep coming back to Noosa each year…the eldest wants to go to Kona [IRONMAN World Championships] one day.”
“They’re pretty competitive…they like the races, they enjoy their friends that they do it with. They just enjoy all the sports; the swimming, the running and the riding.”
This year, the Ringwood Triathlon Club TRYstars program will culminate in participation at the Melbourne Weet-Bix TRYathlon on March 10, 2019.
Ringwood Triathlon Club’s TRYstars program kicks off on Wednesday November 14, running until Wednesday March 6, 2019, with a six-week break for the holiday period. To register head to www.bit.ly/TRYstars18
