The nation’s best young triathletes shined in the Individual Events at the 2017 School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships yesterday in Penrith. Not only were there outstanding race performances, but fantastic displays of sportsmanship and camaraderie between participants from all states and territories.

The supporter-friendly course, calm waters and glorious weather provided the perfect setting for Day 1 of competition at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. 

Queensland claimed the first win of the day in the junior girls race with Jessica Pike crossing the line at 39:28. Australian Capital Territory's triathlete Chloe Bateup followed in second place (39:28) with Queensland's Jazzy Shults claiming third with a time of 39:38. 

Queensland took out the junior boys race with Jackson Medway clocking in at 37:28 followed by fellow Queenslander Mitchell Yarde (37:40) just 12 seconds after. Western Australia's Gregory McVicker claimed third on the podium with a time of 37:54.

Queensland triathlete Richelle Hill claimed first place in the intermediate girls race with a time of 51:09. Second place was secured by South Australia's Charlotte Derbyshire (51:20) and Queensland took third place with Keely Whittaker clocking in at 51:29. 

In the intermediate boys race, Western Australia's, Alec Davison claimed victory with a time of 46:27 - 15 seconds before second-place finisher Oscar Dart from Victoria (46:42). Charles Liebenberg representing Queensland took out third place with a time of 47:13. 

Competing in her sixth School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships, Western Australia's Jessica Claxton won her third national title by taking out the senior girls race with a time of 1:01:34. Queensland's Romy Wolstencroft finished second clocking in at 1:01:50. Fellow Queenslander Victoria Gillies claimed third place with a time of 1:02:03. 

New South Wales triathlete Lorcan Redmon put a remarkable performance in the senior boys race to claim his fourth School Sport Australia title with a time of 00:55:14. Queensland showed their strength with Dean Cane crossing the line second (00:55:39) and New South Wales' Connor Whitley in  third place clocking in at 00:55:48.
