Cairns Airport today announced the extension of their existing partnership with IRONMAN Cairns for a second term on the eve of the 2013 event to be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013.

Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Brown, said Cairns Airport has been delighted with outcomes the partnership has delivered so far and the airport’s ongoing commitment offers further unique opportunities for the Cairns region.

“Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns and the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival are exciting additions to the Tropical North Queensland’s growing sports tourism offer. We are confident they will continue to attract thousands of visitors over the next few years as they put Cairns firmly on the map as an Australian adventure centre capital,” Mr Brown said.

“The Ironman brand is a key platform for us in attracting visitors from Asian source markets. With direct services operating into Cairns from Japan, Hong Kong, mainland China and Guam as well as from Singapore via Darwin, we can offer competitors excellent aviation access to these events.”

“We see the continuation of our partnership with the Adventure Festival and Ironman Cairns as a real opportunity to leverage our investment in these iconic events, as they help increase visitors to the region and promote our destination as well as encouraging healthy activities and providing our local community with unique opportunities to participate on many levels.”

The IRONMAN brand now positions Cairns and Cairns Airport on a global stage through its affiliation with 30 other IRONMAN events and 59 IRONMAN 70.3 races around the world.

Now, in its third year, IRONMAN Cairns has delivered real and measurable economic benefits to the region.

IRONMAN Asia Pacific Chief Executive Officer Geoff Meyer welcomed the renewal of Cairns Airport as naming rights partner of this significant event in Tropical North Queensland.

“The 2012 Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, including IRONMAN Cairns, was a highly-anticipated event for the region attracting thousands of visitors to Tropical North Queensland while injecting millions into the local economy and in doing so supporting the tourism industry, business and employment.

“Last year 78% of attendees flew to Cairns, 15% of whom were international so the event offers great synergies to work closely with the Airport to maximise visitation from the emerging Asian markets.

“The 2012 event boasted record participation, attracting more than 2,500 athletes from 32 countries and contributing an estimated economic impact of $9.09 million, up from $7.75 million in 2011.

“By partnering with Cairns Airport we aim to engage with the local community and have them involved in all aspects of the event from participating to volunteering or just simply cheering on the world’s best Ironman athletes,” Mr Meyer said.

The 2013 Cairns Airport Adventure Festival runs from 2 - 9 June, 2013
