Kona was a few weeks ago now, and deservedly so, June Ward spent some time "working hard" reading her book by the poolside after the event.

As Australia's best result on the big island, the 57 year old from Triathlon Western Australia Inc bagged a silver medal at last weekend's IRONMAN World Championship in the female 55-59 category.

It's her fifth Kona, where she is no stranger to the podium - clocking up one win, two seconds and a third - however, with a 12th place last year she was back for redemption in 2018.

Aiming for first place, Ward, trained by Brad Hosking and a member of the Fremantle Triathlon Club, suffered some injuries in the lead up with a fractured hip socket impacting her running preparation, as well as picking up a viral infection just before the big dance. So a silver medal was very satisfying,

"I was so thankful for my result. It was not at all what I was expecting after having injury and illness setbacks right up until race day," said Ward

"Still, I thought, well I've come all this way, I'll just get out there get on with it and do the best I can."

Turns out the best she can, is pretty good - gaining a silver medal in her category and crossing the line in 11:00:54."

"It's never an easy day at Kona but race day conditions were almost perfect and support from family and spectators so uplifting."

Congratulations June - pictured with her husband Mark 'aka Manager' above. We think you go more than alright!
