Fettell and Marangon win Forster Ultimate Triathlon

Fettell and Marangon win Forster Ultimate Triathlon

Clayton Fettell and Lisa Marangon claimed convincing victories in today’s Forster Ultimate Triathlon put on by Elite Energy over the unique distance of 2km/120km/20km.

Men’s Race

In sunny, but windy conditions, Clayton Fettell got his domestic season off to a flying start with a win at the Forster Ultimate Triathlon in New South Wales.

Over the unique distance of 2km/120km/20km, Fettell blew away his competition, which included former Ironman Western Australia winner Tim Berkel.

Right from the start Fettell dropped the hammer, exiting the two-kilometre swim in 24:15. From there he rode the 120-kilometres unchallenged, extending his advantage between him and the chase pack which included Berkel, Adam Gordon, Chris Dmitrieff, Luke Whitmore and Michael Fox.

Despite a few unsuccessful moves from the chase pack, Fettell cruised through the 120-kilometre ride in 2:51:54 to take a sizable lead into T2.

Once he passed through T2, Fettell was all smiles, cruising through the final leg in 1:16:55 to take an impressive wire-to-wire victory.

Following home Fettell was his Aeromax teammate Berkel, who finished more than eight minutes down in a time of 4:43:43. Rounding out the podium a further 3:17 adrift of Berkel was Fox, who interestingly enough had the days fastest second transition, taking just 32 seconds to get out on the run.

Women’s Race

Lisa Marangon was a standout in the women’s race at the Forster Ultimate Triathlon, easily accounting for Rebecca Hoschke, Nicole Ward and Natalie Silvestro in the light women’s field.

Marangon led from coast to coast in Forster, claiming the fastest swim and bike splits, and she finished off an impressive day with the second fastest run split to stop the clock in 5:11:03.

Hoschke was the next cross the finish line, not too far behind in 5:17:45, with Ward completing the top three in 5:24:49.

Marangon is now two from two racing in Australia this season after taking out Yeppoon 70.3 in August. The big test for Marangon will be to take this impressive domestic form to a big international event and put down a strong performance. She’ll have a big opportunity in January with the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship taking place across the ditch in Auckland. Until then, expect to see Marangon at the pointy end of most races she attends in Australia.
