Matt Hauser has put together another stunning World Cup performance in Nur-Sultan to take out the win over a quality field.

With the race moving to a duathlon format of 5km run /40km bike /10km run due to water quality concerns, Hauser showed class and stamina as he pulled away from a fighting Wian Sullwald (RSA) and quality runner Matt McElroy (USA) in the final stages of the race to take home the win.

Speaking to ITU Media, Hauser said that he wanted to give today’s race his all and prove that he has that 10km leg speed.

“I was really happy with that and got a lot of confidence in the MTR, mixed relay format, sprint distance and that Standard distance so looking forward to the season ahead.”
 
“I came back with a bit of a chip on my shoulder this year and wanting to prove a few things shout out to the boys out there Matt Mac (McElroy) and Sullwald, it was a great racing by them and Brandon Copeland my training partner in ninth place as well – great race out there today.”

Hauser’s win in Nur-Sultan comes off the back of a gold medal performance in Chengdu in May and places him in good stead ahead of the Tokyo 2020 test in August.

Hauser’s training partner, Brandon Copeland wasn’t far behind the Queenslander with a ninth place finish in 1:44:53. Copeland kept himself in the mix throughout the entire affair, with a strong final run that saw him chase down several opponents to finish inside the top ten.

Fellow Australian Max Nuemann put together a gutsy race to finish just behind Copeland in 1:45:04. Making his move in the final stages of the bike, Nuemann showed promising signs of what’s to come as he held a seven second gap over the lead group heading out of T2, before being run down in to finish 10th.

A challenging final run leg saw Marcel Walkington cross the line in 34th with 1:49:31.

In the Elite Women’s race, the Australian women put forward a fight from start to finish, with Jaz Hedgeland, Tamsyn Moana-Veale and Joanne Miller all within sight of the leaders throughout the entire race. 

A strong run off the bike from Hedgeland saw the young West Australian run home strong to sixth in 1:57:42. While Tamsyn Moana-Veale showed a promising performance on the bike, leading from the front for much of the 40km ride, before being chased down on the run to claim ninth in 1:58:21. 

Joanne Miller also kept herself in the mix, coming out of T2 in second before a challenging final run leg saw her competitors chase her down with the 21-year old taking home 12th in 1:59:08.
 
Japan’s Ai Ueda outclassed the strong field of runners in the final stages of the race, breaking away with eventual runner-up Carolyn Hayes (IRE) early on in the final run, before making her move and forging on ahead solo to take out the win 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competitors.

Over in Nottingham on the World Triathlon Series circuit, Mixed Relay debutants Matthew Roberts and Ryan Fisher, as well as stateswomen Emma Jeffcoat and Natalie van Coevorden honed their Mixed Relay skills alongside some of the best to take home eighth in 1:25:18. 

Much like Nur-Sultan, Nottingham’s Mixed Relay had been moved to a duathlon prior to race start due to water quality concerns, leaving the young group of Aussies to battle it out with the best on the run and the bike.

A strong start from Emma Jeffcoat and Matthew Roberts saw the Aussies place themselves firmly in the middle of the field amongst a competitive group.

However, the experience and talent of the field shone through in the back half of the race, with Great Britain making their break in the form of a strong run from Sophie Coldwell, leaving world-class runner, Alex Yee to bring home the title for Great Britain. Switzerland claimed third with a stellar run from Adrien Brifford, while France held on to take third.

The World Triathlon Series now heads to Montreal, Canada later this month.
