How to get involved in the Australian Schools Triathlon Festival

School Sport Australia (SSA) and Triathlon Australia (TA) are excited to be jointly hosting the inaugural Australian Schools Triathlon Festival (ASTF) from 18-21 April, 2017 at the International Regatta Centre in Penrith, New South Wales. The partnership will deliver an innovative new triathlon multi-sport festival to provide pathways for our future champions.

The ASTF is an outstanding opportunity for secondary school students from all over Australia to participate in a national triathlon festival. It will also provide an entry level opportunity for students with a disability to participate in Paratriathlon and Aquathlon as part of the festival.

The ASTF concept is designed to deliver a superior event experience for the student athletes. TA in consultation with SSA has engaged SME360 and Triathlon NSW to deliver the SSA championship event and the entire ASTF to a fully professional level. The combination of the SSA championship and the inclusion of participation triathlon, school relay and Aquathlon program into the ASTF opens up a whole new opportunity for students to participate in this dynamic sport on a variety of levels.

The ASTF has two key event categories; the existing SSA Triathlon Championship and the new Australian Open Schools Triathlon. The SSA Triathlon Championship is a draft legal event with an individual triathlon and teams’ triathlon relay. For students to compete in the SSA Triathlon Championship they must be selected into their respective state or territory school sport representative teams. Selection into state or territory school sport teams means they can race for the prestigious SSA Triathlon Championship title. For further information on participating in the SSA championship please contact your respective school sport state or territory member body. You can find their contact details here.

Athletes not participating in the SSA Triathlon Championship can represent their school in the Australian Open Schools Triathlon. The Australian Open Schools Triathlon event is a non-drafting triathlon race including the addition of a Paratriathlon wave for students with a disability. There is also an Open Schools Triathlon relay event where schools can compete for the title of all round best triathlon school in Australia. For more information on how to register, click here.

  • The ASTF will be complemented by a range of other triathlon events including the:
Penrith OTU Sprint Distance Triathlon Oceania Cup – Elite Men and Women
  • Penrith ITU World Paratriathlon Event (WPE)
  • Australian Corporate Triathlon Series (Sydney-leg)
