Josh Amberger headlines Ibiza-bound elite Aussies

Professional Long Course Triathlete Josh Amberger headlines the list of elite Australians announced for the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza later this month.

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships are a major event on the triathlon calendar, attracting elite, para and age-group athletes from around the globe to compete in various disciplines and offering them the opportunity to showcase their skills, with the goal of taking home the coveted title of world champion.

Amberger, an eight-time IRONMAN 70.3 Champion, is no stranger to the World Championship podium having finished second at the event in 2017. He also competed at the 2015 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships.

Joining him on the start-line of the Long Course Triathlon World Championships race is fellow professional triathlete Penny Slater.

Although Slater will be making her Long Course World Championship debut in Ibiza, the 27-year-old brings a wealth of World Championship racing experience, having competed in the Cross Triathlon World Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019, as well as the Aquathlon World Championships in 2017.

In the Elite Duathlon World Championship, Australia will be represented by Sam Mileham and Matt Smith.

Both men are well versed on the world stage having finished 8th (Mileham) and 12th (Smith) at last year's World Games in Birmingham, United States.

Mileham competed at the 2019 Duathlon and Aquathlon World Championships and more recently raced at the 2023 Oceania Triathlon Cups in Devonport and Taupo.

Smith is well-acquainted with the event, having competed at the Duathlon World Championships in 2017, 2018 & 2019,

Two junior athletes, Nick Odgers and Billie Micham will also head to Ibiza later this month. Odgers will compete in the Junior Aquathlon World Championship, while Micham will take part in the Junior Cross Triathlon World Championship.

The group of six join Team AUS alongside the 79 age-group athletes donning the green and gold at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships running from 29 April to 7 May.
