Triathlon Australia welcomes Liam O’Neill to the position of NSW Performance Centre Head Coach, in a new role which will provide athletes access to a world-class training environment in NSW.

The performance centre is supported by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) with funding provided by the AIS Performance Pathways Solutions Grant Scheme and Triathlon Australia looks forward to establishing further partnerships in NSW to support the centre.

O’Neill joins Triathlon Australia from British Triathlon where he was the Leeds Performance Coach and formed a key part of the Leeds coaching team that developed young-gun Olympic champions and British pathway success stories; Tokyo 2020 Mixed Relay Gold and individual Silver medallists Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown, as well as Tokyo Mixed Relay team member Jessica Learmonth, to name a few.

Renowned on the international triathlon scene, O’Neill will bring his proven coaching methodology and collaborative approach to Australia’s triathlon high performance program with a focus on creating an inclusive, values-driven, environment that harnesses talent and empowers athletes to continually develop and perform.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to work for Triathlon Australia,” said Liam O’Neill on the career move.

“I truly believe there is a wealth of talent in Australian triathlon and I’m thoroughly looking forward to working with the athletes, coaches and staff.

“I have a strong desire to represent Triathlon Australia to the best of my ability as we strive to deliver the success that this proud sporting nation deserves.”

Triathlon Australia’s National Performance Director, Justin Drew, is pleased to announce the appointment; with the establishment of the NSW Performance Centre and Head Coach position a key component of Triathlon Australia’s pathway strategy.

“Liam has a proven track record in coaching success and his experience working across the athlete pathway will be enormously valuable,” said Drew.

“We’re looking forward to Liam joining the team, and growing the pool of young talent in NSW, like he has successfully done in the UK.”

As the NSW Performance Centre Head Coach, O’Neill will work closely with Triathlon NSW/ACT Pathway Lead, Robyn Low-Hart, in supporting the identification and development of the next generation of athletes, and facilitating a community of practice with coaches in NSW.

Further information on Triathlon Australia’s performance pathways strategy, and the adoption of the new AIS Athlete Categorisation Framework, will be available following the completion of the Tokyo Games Team Debrief, and broader AIS Review, later in the year.
