Oceania racing to ramp up in Australia with new events confirmed

Oceania racing to ramp up in Australia with new events confirmed

Australia’s amended domestic performance calendar provides silver lining for Aussie Commonwealth Games and World Championship hopefuls.

Following an uncertain start to the domestic season, Oceania racing will go ahead at Devonport, Stockton, Mooloolaba, Gold Coast and Werribee with automatic nomination and selection races in Australia confirmed for Elite, U23 and Juniors.

Triathlon Australia has secured alternative race opportunities in Australia at Mooloolaba Triathlon and Gold Coast Triathlon, and released amended selection policies and nomination criteria, following the cancellation of Oceania Championship events in New Zealand due to impacts of COVID-19 and Trans-Tasman travel limitations.

The revised schedule will mean Australia’s top talent will now race for automatic nomination for the team headed to Birmingham, at the 2022 Oceania Triathlon Cup Gold Coast on the Southport Broadwater Parklands course in April - the same venue which hosted the Gold Coast 2018 games.

Athletes will have the opportunity to secure a spot on the 2022 U23 World Championship team with automatic selection up for grabs at the 2022 Oceania Triathlon Cup Mooloolaba (U23) and Junior World Championship contenders will battle it out at the 2022 Oceania Triathlon Junior Championships at Werribee South Beach Triathlon. The Werribee South Beach Triathlon will also play host to the Australian Youth and Junior Mixed Relay Championships and Junior Oceania Relay Championships, as well as provide individual racing opportunities for youth athletes over the super sprint format.

The 2022 season will get started this weekend at Devonport including the 2022 Oceania Triathlon Para Cup, 2022 Oceania Elite Triathlon Cup, 2022 Oceania Triathlon Junior Cup, as well as the Australian Sprint Championships (Elite, U23 & Junior) and Australian Mixed Relay Championships (Elite). The Oceania Relay Championships were unfortunately unable to proceed at Devonport due to travel restrictions impacting New Zealand athletes attendance.

Stockton's Oceania Paratriathlon Championships will go ahead at the rescheduled Island Triathlon on 13 March and although the 2022 Oceania Elite Triathlon Cup Runaway Bay (including the Mixed Relay Invitational) has been removed (cancelled) from the schedule, to accommodate the addition of the Elite Sprint and Standard Oceania Cups in April, Runaway Bay will host the Australian Paratriathlon Championships on the 24 April.

Triathlon Australia, Oceania Triathlon, World Triathlon and Australian Race Directors will continue to work through challenges of operating during the pandemic to deliver the domestic season.

“It’s been a challenging start to the year for events and it’s unfortunate to lose the Oceania Championships in New Zealand from the schedule, however we’re happy to have secured those new race opportunities at Mooloolaba and Gold Coast,” said Justin Drew, Triathlon Australia National Performance Director.

“This domestic season will produce some exciting competition with spots on the teams headed to Birmingham, Montreal and Abu Dhabi on the table,” said Drew.

“We know challenges still exist with travel, and we appreciate the ongoing adaptability of our athletes, coaches, support staff and race directors.”
