PINE RIVERS GOLD RUSH AT TWIN WATERS

PINE RIVERS GOLD RUSH AT TWIN WATERS

Brisbane’s Pine Rivers Tri Club completed a golden treble when the Australian Youth Triathlon Championships came to an exciting finale at the Novotel, Twin Waters today.

For coach QAS Assistant-coach Josh White it was a perfect ending when his 17-18 years team of, Max Rose, Brittany Dutton and Matt Roberts took out the coveted Mixed Teams Relay – an event that will be contested for the first time at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and is almost certain to be added to the Olympic program for the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Competitors each completed a “super sprint” triathlon of 200m swim; 4km bike and 1.2 run, tagging in between and racing as if there was “Commonwealth gold” on the line.

The Pine Rivers trio had to dig deep to come from behind and chase down the leading teams before claiming the gold medal.

National Schools qualifier Rose dug deep for Pine Rivers splitting 14 minutes 49 before tagging 17-18 years individual winner and Youth Olympic Games representative Dutton who hauled in the leaders, splitting the fastest female time of the day of 15:15 before changing over to male individual champion Roberts.

The Youth champion, third in the Scody Junior Series, showed his class after going into the final 1.2km run alongside Gabriel Dennison (TVDP1).

Roberts. As he did on Thursday against Calvin Quirk, ran away with the gold for Pine Rivers, splitting 14:05 – the equal fastest time of the day with Jack Van Stekelenburg (TVDP1) and South Australian Jack Tierney (LCT).

Van Stekelenburg produced a brilliant swim and was second out of the water in the opening leg behind John Ashleigh (ACT4) and Liam Sproule (ACT 2).

But in the end it was Pine Rivers taking their third gold, ahead of TVDP1 the silver and ACT 4 the bronze.

In the 13-15 years event it was the Queensland CRC Combo of Braelan Renton, Dean Cane and Dimi Coventry who came from behind to take the gold medal from the #1Body team from NSW of Lorcan Redmond, Jack Ferris and Emily Jamgotchian with the bronze going to the BH Giants team of Caleb Agostino-Morrow and Sophie Saunders from NSW who combined with Victorian Kurt McDonald.
