RELAYS WRAP UP AUSTRALIAN YOUTH TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS

The best of Queensland and Western Australia have combined to win the 13-15 years  Mixed Teams Triathlon Relay event at the 2013 Australian Youth Triathlon Championships, Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast today.

After a successful day’s individual racing on Monday, teenage athletes from around Australia came together in Triathlon’s latest relay event.

Jessica Corliss and Adam Brown from Queensland combined with Kira Hedgeland and Jeremy Shaw from WA in the “East to West” team to account for Triathlon ACT with a Queensland team “Guns and Roses” taking third place.

All athletes had to complete a 250m swim; 4km bike and a 1.2km run – a similar format used in ITU World Championships and proposed for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The 16-18 years relay event saw an all Queensland team “The Heat Is On” with individual winners from yesterday Breony Heaton and Calvin Quirk joining Lucy Smith and Kye Wylde to win the gold ahead of the NSW Waratahs And Le DAT Ironmen.

Triathlon Australia’s National Manager for Athlete Development, Craig Redman said he was delighted with the efforts of Australia’s next generation.

“This event has already grown from last year with record entries hitting over 150 and we can only see it getting bigger and better,” said Redman.

“The spirit from the athletes, their coaches, clubs and parents is what this sport is all about and I have to commend Triathlon Australia for its support of this event and Triathlon Queensland for supplying the infrastructure for what was a very successful two days on the Sunshine Coast.”

16 -18yrs Mixed Teams Triathlon Relay (4 x 250 Swim/4km Bike/1.2km Run)

1st The Heat is On 01:02:22 (Lucy Smith QLD 16:25; Kye Wylde QLD 14:51; Breony Heaton QLD 16:42; Calvin Quirk QLD 14:22).

2nd NSW Waratahs 01:02:54 (Laura Cook NSW 16:00; Mitchell Baker NSW 14:45; Blythe Quick NSW 17:26; Bryce Murry NSW 14:42).

3rd Le DAT Ironmen 01:03:07 (Sophie Malowiecki QLD 15:45; Alexander Young QLD 15:47; Brittany Dutton QLD 15:46; Lawrence Garufi QLD 15:49).
