Triathlon Australia COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions

COVID-19 has forced changes to our regular way of life and has presented significant challenges as we all attempt to adapt in a rapidly changing environment.  

Together, Triathlon Australia’s National Leadership Team, has spent considerable time over the past weeks and days adapting our strategies to meet the current demands of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

We all must do our part to mitigate the spread of the virus.  When we do, our ability to flatten the curve is dramatic.

Triathlon Australia has compiled a comprehensive 'Frequently Asked Questions' document on the impact of COVID-19 on the below topics: 

 

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA AFFILIATED CLUBS

CAN I STILL TRAIN WITH MY AFFILIATED TRIATHLON CLUB?

The Australian Government issued updated guidelines on non-essential public gatherings on Sunday March 29, limiting most indoor and outdoor non-essential gatherings to 2 people.

As a triathlon community we need to be part of the solution, not the problem that Government is trying to tackle by social distancing and reducing large gatherings. 

All members should adhere to the Australian Government’s guidelines regarding social distancing and non-essential gatherings. Please consider training by yourself, or at home where possible.

You should always keep 1.5 METRES AWAY from people, avoid any handshakes or physical contact with people outside your family.

IF I TRAIN, AM I STILL COVERED BY MY TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP INSURANCE?

EVENTS: Triathlon Australia members are NOT covered by insurance at any triathlon events until the end of June. Triathlon Australia has withdrawn event sanctioning for all events up until the end of June. No sanctioning NO EVENT/ COMPETITION INSURANCE.

TRAINING: Current applicable Triathlon Australia members will have training insurance. If you elect to train it does NOT affect your insurance, you are covered for both Personal Accident and Public Liability Insurance, as long as you are following all Government/State guidelines. YES, TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA TRAINING INSURANCE COVERAGE, SO LONG AS YOU ARE COMPLIANT WITH ALL GOVERNMENT/STATE GUIDELINES.

 

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA SANCTIONED RACES/ EVENTS

AS A PARTICIPANT I HAVE ENTERED A RACE WHICH HAS BEEN CANCELLED, HOW DO I RECEIVE INFORMATION ABOUT MY ENTRY FEE, NEW EVENT DATE ETC?

Triathlon Australia current members please contact the EVENT DIRECTLY which you have entered, for example if you have entered the Luke Harrop Sprint Distance event on the Gold Coast in April you would contact the event organiser The Event Crew https://www.goldcoasttri.com.au/ 

I AM A CURRENT TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA RACE DIRECTOR WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS I SHOULD KNOW?

Sanctioning: Triathlon Australia have withdrawn sanctioning for all events (even events under 500 participants). Triathlon Australia has withdrawn sanctioning until the 30th of June 2020. Please note in these challenging circumstances this date may be reviewed. Current Triathlon Australia registered race directors will be contacted directly with any updated information.
Sanctioning Fees: All sanctioning fees will be transferred to a postponed event or a new event of the race director’s selection. Please get in touch with Triathlon Australia if you require any further assistance or information about sanctioning fees technical@triathlon.org.au 
One Day License (ODL): if you transfer entry fees to another event, ODL should also transfer to this new date; if you don’t transfer entry fees to a new date, and you cancel your event, the ODL must be refunded to the participant.
2020/2021 National Events Calendar Triathlon Australia will notify all registered race directors when an announcement date is confirmed. Triathlon Australia will not announce this calendar at the end of April 2020.
Online Sanctioning Portal: Should you need assistance in the Online Sanctioning Portal (OSP) with postponements (creating a new event), please contact your STTA sanctioning officer. For new World Qualifying Event dates proposals, please contact technical@triathlon.org.au or events@triathlon.org.au

2020-2021 TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA EVENTS CALENDAR (PERFORMANCE AND PARTICIPATION CALENDARS)

WHEN WILL TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA BE ANNOUNCING THE 2020-2021 NATIONAL EVENTS CALENDAR?

Triathlon Australia IS DELAYING the announcement date of the 2020-2021 Triathlon Australia National Events Calendar. Please keep any eye on the Triathlon Australia website for up to date information on this announcement. 2019-2020 Triathlon Australia members will receive direct correspondence via email when the 2020-2021 National Events Calendar is announced.

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA ACCREDITED TECHNICAL OFFICIALS

WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO OFFICIATE AGAIN AT TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA SANCTIONED EVENTS?

At this stage Triathlon Australia have withdrawn all event and competition sanctioning until the 30th June 2020. Events after this date will be reassessed closer to this time. Triathlon Australia will contact all current Triathlon Australia technical officials via direct email when Triathlon Australia begins to sanction events/ competitions moving forward.

DUE TO EVENT CANCELLATIONS, I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO OFFICIATE AT 3 EVENTS THIS SEASON – CAN I STILL MAINTAIN MY ACCREDITATION FOR NEXT SEASON? 

YES: Triathlon Australia technical officials will still receive accreditation for next season 2020-2021 (this includes Level 2 and 3 officials who were unable to meet the requirements). Triathlon Australia will work with the State and Territory Triathlon Associations to determine who is eligible to receive discounted membership for next season (2020-2021). However our aim is to be flexible with these decisions.  

I’M INTERESTED IN JOINING THE TECHNICAL PROGRAMME – IS THIS STILL AN OPTION FOR 2019-2020? 

YES: You can still complete the Level 1 official course online until you are able to conduct your Field of Play assessment at the next event. 

I’M AN EXISTING OFFICIAL – WHAT WILL BE DONE TO ENSURE THAT OUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ARE UP TO DATE WHILE EVENTS ARE CANCELLED?

Triathlon Australia will continue to interact with current Triathlon Australia technical officials. Triathlon Australia will put ONLINE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS into place to ensure that our technical official community stay engaged and informed. Triathlon Australia will directly email current Triathlon Australia technical officials with any resources which they can use during this challenging period.

IF A SENIOR TECHNICAL TEAM WAS SELECTED PRIOR TO EVENT POSTPONEMENTS, WILL THE SAME TEAM CONDUCT THESE ROLES WHEN THE EVENT IS HELD?

YES: Members of the Senior Technical Team will be expected to retain these roles when the event commences. Senior Technical Teams will be contacted with further information regarding their roles when Triathlon Australia recommences sanctioning events.

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA AFFILIATED COACHES

AS AN ACCREDITED COACH CAN I STILL CONDUCT GROUP TRAINING SESSIONS?

The Australian Government issued updated guidelines on non-essential public gatherings on Sunday March 29, limiting most indoor and outdoor non-essential gatherings to 2 people.

Triathlon Australia current accredited coaches will be communicated directly with via email if this situation changes.

We ask that all coaches take into consideration the current dynamic situation and your social responsibility when thinking about how to conduct training.

For those clubs, squads and coaches wishing to continue conducting group training sessions, Triathlon Australia recommends REVIEWING CURRENT GROUP TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS to ensure that they adhere to the Australian Government’s guidelines regarding social distancing and limits on public gatherings. 

DOES MY COACHING INSURANCE STILL COVER ME TO CONDUCT GROUP TRAINING SESSIONS?

YES: Triathlon Australia Insurance will remain active for coaches and members, as long as you are compliant with all Federal and State Government Guidelines. 

YES, TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA TRAINING INSURANCE COVERAGE, SO LONG AS YOU ARE COMPLIANT WITH ALL GOVERNMENT/STATE GUIDELINES.

2020 AUSTRALIAN AGE GROUP TRIATHLON (EDMONTON) AND MULTISPORT (ALMERE) TEAMS

ARE THE 2020 ITU AGE GROUP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN EDMONTON (TRIATHLON) AND ALMERE (MULTISPORT) GOING AHEAD?

YES: As of the 23rd of March the 2020 International Triathlon Union Age Group Triathlon (Edmonton) and Multisport (Almere) World Championships will be proceeding as planned. Please note changes are happening rapidly to events and this status may change at a later date. Triathlon Australia will provide updates via email to individual athletes who have applied for the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon (Edmonton) and Multisport (Almere) Teams (post the application deadline of 5pm AEDST on Monday the 6th of April 2020).

DO I STILL NEED TO APPLY FOR THE 2020 AUSTRALIAN AGE GROUP TRIATHLON (EDMONTON) AND MULTISPORT (ALMERE) TEAM?

YES: 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon (Edmonton) and Multisport (Almere) Team Application Deadline is 5pm AEDST on Monday the 6th of April 2020. If you do not apply for the team in the distance you would like to be selected for by this deadline you will not have the opportunity to be selected to the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon (Edmonton) Team and the 2020 Australian Age Group Multisport (Almere) Team.

2020 AUSTRALIAN AGE GROUP TRIATHLON (EDMONTON) AND MULTISPORT (ALMERE) TEAM ANNOUNCEMENTS?

Triathlon Australia MAY DELAY the announcement of the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team and the 2020 Australian Age Group Multisport Team. Australian athletes who have applied online for the team by 5pm AEDST on Monday the 6th of April 2020 will be communicated directly with through direct email if the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team or the 2020 Australian Age Group Multisport Team announcement may be delayed. Currently the team announcements are scheduled for the 28th of April 2020, however this announcement may be changed.

WHEN WILL TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCE THE SELECTION EVENTS FOR THE 2021 AUSTRALIAN AGE GROUP TRIATHLON AND MULTISPORT TEAM?

The 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon (Bermuda) and Multisport (Townsville) Team Selection Policies and 2021 Australian Age Group Team Triathlon (Bermuda) and Multisport (Townsville) Selection Events was to be released onto the TA website on the 27th of April 2020.  Australian age group athletes are aware we are in unprecedented times with the current world situation (Covid-19) and updates and event changes are happening rapidly. Triathlon Australia IS DELAYING the announcement date of the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon and Multisport Team Selection Policies and the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon and Multisport Team Selection Events. Please keep any eye on the Triathlon Australia website for up to date information on this announcement. 2019-2020 Triathlon Australia members will receive direct correspondence via email when the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon and Multisport Team Selection Policies and 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon and Multisport Team Selection Events are announced.

Which Junior races have been cancelled?

  •  New Plymouth OTU Junior Championship (28.03.2020)
  • Oceania Mixed Relay Championships (29.03.2020)
  • Gold Coast Continental Cup (05.04.2020)
  • Moreton Bay Standard Distance Continental Championships (19.04.2020).
  • Runaway Bay Super Sprint Continental Cup & Mixed Relay Invitational (01.05 - 03.05.20)

Any decision to reschedule these events will be communicated in due course. Please keep an eye on the Triathlon Australia website for announcements of rescheduled races. 

How do I qualify for the 2020 ITU World Junior Triathlon Championships Selection in Edmonton, Canada?

As the Automatic selection race for Junior World Championships will not take place (New Plymouth OTU Junior Championship), selections will be referred back to the Selection Policy (section 2.4b). This states that should this event be void, discretionary selections will be made for all positions on the Junior World Championship team.  

The 2020 Australian Junior Triathlon Team Selection Policy can be found on the Triathlon Australia website. 

What happens if I wanted to race at the 2020 Junior National Race Series? 

Any decision on what happens in relation to the Junior National Series and Junior Bursary will be made once there is further clarity on the 2020 racing calendar. Please note the 2020-2021 Triathlon Australia National Calendar announcement is DELAYED. Please note all current Triathlon Australia members will be notified directly through the Tri Life newsletter when the announcement is made.

 

SPORTING SCHOOLS PROGRAM – SPORT AUSTRALIA PARTICIPATION PROGRAM

WILL THE SPORTING SCHOOLS PROGRAM CONTINUE?

YES: The Sporting Schools program intends to continue to fund schools to encourage physical activity for Australian students. Sport and physical activity in schools has a positive influence on children’s confidence, motivation and wellbeing. 

Sport Australia will follow the guidelines set by the Australian Government and will respect the decisions made by State and Territory education departments and Catholic and independent school bodies.

Sport Australia understands that many schools are making the decision to protect their school community by limiting the number of external visitors to their sites which includes coaches and delivery partners. Sporting Schools delivery partners must respect these decisions made by schools.
