Athletes prepare for Qatar Airways IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast this weekend

Athletes from across Australia and around the world are putting the final touches to their preparations for the Qatar Airways IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast this Sunday 10 September.

This weekend will be the 10th running of the event and will see more than 1,800 athletes set to take on the 1.9km swim starting and finishing on Mooloolaba Beach, a 90km ride taking in the Sunshine Motorway and a 21.1km run finishing on the Mooloolaba Esplanade.

Leanna Ali, Regional Director for The IRONMAN Group Oceania, said that the team looked forward to welcoming athletes back to every popular Sunshine Coast event.

“The Qatar Airways IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast is a popular event for athletes from home and abroad and we look forward to seeing more than 1,800 out on course this Sunday,” said Ali.

“The Sunshine Coast is the perfect setting for an event like this and we’re thrilled to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast this weekend.

“We’re also set to welcome some of the top professional athletes in the region back to the Sunshine Coast and look forward to seeing more of the close racing in both the men’s and women's fields that we’ve been spoilt by in recent years,” she said.

“We also have an IRONKIDS event taking place on Saturday meaning that there are plenty of opportunities for the whole family to be involved in IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast.”

Sunshine Coast Council Economy Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said this was a milestone 10th event for Mooloolaba and a great opportunity to showcase the Sunshine Coast.

“With an enviable climate, our region is a destination of choice for sports events like this, and we are pleased the 2023 competition has drawn so many visiting participants,” he said.

“Its ongoing success is thanks to the hard work the IRONMAN crew put in to deliver a mass-participation sports event, and of course the support from our local community.

“Aside from the global exposure we get from being part of the IRONMAN 70.3 series, the Sunshine Coast event provides an invaluable contribution to many of our local businesses outside of the peak tourism seasons.”

Qatar Airways IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
