Hosted by Queensland School Sport
The School Sport Australia (SSA) Triathlon National Championships kick-off in Hervey Bay on Tuesday, April 19 with around 190 students aged 13 - 19 competing in one of the most exciting school sport competitions in the country.
Australia’s best boy and girl junior triathletes from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, ACT, Western Australia and South Australia will compete for the title of SSA Triathlon National Champions through individual events taking place on Wednesday, April 20 followed by relay events on Thursday, April 21.
Hosted by Queensland School Sport (QSS), the championships officially open this morning at the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere at 9.30am. Afterwards they will venture across the strait to Fraser Island before competition heats up on Wednesday.
SSA Triathlon National Secretary Meredith Prime said the relationship between SSA and Triathlon Australia (TA) has significantly strengthened with the SSA Triathlon National Championships now more closely aligned to TA rules and processes.
“Triathlon continues to grow and flourish within our school sport system and this week is a chance for our finest young athletes to showcase their skills and talents.”
“A national championship is certainly the pinnacle of our school sport program and I am sure that athletes and spectators alike are looking forward to a wonderful few days of triathlon in Hervey Bay,” she said.
SSA Executive Officer Brad Allen said the aims of SSA, which QSS will foster during this event, are to ensure that students develop athletically, socially and educationally from their involvement in school sport.
“We would like to congratulate all to the students who have been selected to represent their state or territory and wish them the best of luck.”
“We are delighted to be supported by Triathlon Australia and Triathlon Queensland for this prestigious event,” he said.
The Championships also feature a special educational excursion day on Tuesday, April 19 with the athletes set to experience Australia’s iconic Fraser Island.
Overall it will be a huge week of school triathlon action and one not to be missed as the cream of the crop from across the nation will all be on show.
