Nathan Breen, the boy from Cronulla, the breeding ground of so many Australian triathlon greats has finally landed himself an Aquathlon world title in Denmark overnight.

The 22-year-old Mick Delmotte coached Breen, claimed gold and silver in the one race at the 2018 Multisport Aquathlon World Championships, part of the ITU Multisport World Championships Festival in Fyn.

Breen claimed gold in the Under 23s and silver overall in the Elites in a rewarding day in the office.

And his 21-year-old training partner Brady Goodyear was fourth home overall in the Elites claiming bronze in the Under 23s to cap a great day for coach Delamotte while Rahal Jegatheva won silver in the junior men’s division.

In other results, Martta Kytomaki was sixth in the Under 23 womens and Alec Davison sixth in the Junior men’s capping a great day for the Aussies.

Breen, a noted swimmer, wasted no time setting the pace on the opening one kilometre swim in ‘Little Belt’, Middelfart, which was followed by a five-kilometre run.

He led the field into transition and onto the blistering run course.

Breen held on for the first kilometre before Belgium’s Emmanuel Lejeune closed the gap and took control at the front, setting the pace and opening a 45-second lead over Breen and Frenchman Alexis Kardes.

Lejeune dominated the final stage of the run to charge across the finish line and claim the victorious 2018 World Championship and Breen earned the silver medal in the Elite division with the bronze going to Kardes.

“The swim is my strength I like to push pretty hard and make others work behind me and onto the run I tried not to think about what was going on behind me. But I just couldn’t get there in the end.,” Breen said.

“I was aiming for top five – that was my goal, so I have to be pleased with those results.”

It is Breen’s second world title, following his 16-19 years age group triathlon world title win in Cozumel in 2018 – following his disappointing Aquathlon performance the day before for the boy who started his career as a 13-year-old looking up to the legends of the Sutherland Shire, Craig Alexander and Chris McCormack.

Nathan’s parents would take him to the 9:30am school holiday swim sessions at Caringbah pool hosted by the two legends of the sport.
 
“I was told at the time they were world champions so I was pretty impressed with that,” a delighted Breen said after his win.
 
“I used to swim train with them in the holidays; they were so down to earth, reasonable and happy to pass on advice.”
 
Breen was always a strong swimmer and runner and didn’t start to master the bike until he turned 15, when his triathlon career kicked off.

There was gold to Penny Palfrey in the 55-59 years female while Chris Palfrey won silver in the 60-64 years males and Jessica Henderson silver in the 20-24 years, which also saw Courtney Bicknell fifth.
