ITU World Triathlon Grand Final – Age Group Wrap

ITU World Triathlon Grand Final – Age Group Wrap

AUSTRALIA'S Age groupers were on fire in Rotterdam today and looking at the final medal tally the green and gold army has collected 14 medals including seven gold in a great result with four silvers and three bronze and 34 top ten finishes with the Dutch Port City turning on an absolute pearler of a day - perfect conditions for race day.

Madi Roberts, the "Pocket Rocket" from Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast was just happy just to get to the start line for yesterday’s Olympic Distance Age Group World Championship in Rotterdam after a nasty crash out in the weather on Wednesday, threatened to curb her chances of racing.

But when the Australian doctor cleared her to race she certainly gave it her all, winning her 20-24 years age group in fine style.

She was one of seven gold medallists on the Australian team that included triathlon legend Michellie Jones in the 45-49 years Female Sprint.

Roberts victory follows her win earlier in the year at the Cairns 70.3 in June.

"I actually cried when I crossed the line, I was so in shock, I had to work really hard for it, " said Roberts.

"I was in second at the 8km mark and passed the girl in front with 1.5km to go and I pushed really hard and ran down that finish shoot as fast as I could and just didn't look back.

"I was still battered and bruised from the crash and couldn't turn by head from side to side but I am so happy to get the win...they kept an eye on me on Wednesday and I've just been taking it easy and my sister Beth - my support crew - has been looking after me.

Madi and sister Beth will now have a touring holiday for three weeks before she gets ready for some long course races in the Hervey Bay 100, Nepean Olympic Distance, the Hell of the West and the Big Husky.

"I'm thinking of maybe also doing Lake Taupo, Busselton and Port Macquarie."

Madi represents Elite Sports Specialists under coach Andrew Ivy. She is formerly from Port Macquarie.

And when she is not training or racing, Madi who says, "maybe my small size is becoming my signature now", works in Marketing for a Pet company. We'll keep an eye on little Madi - our very own "Pocket Rocket."
