McShane, Copeland secure silver at OTU Sprint Champs

Commonwealth Games bound Charlotte McShane secured the silver in a sprint finish with New Zealanders Andrea Hewitt and Nicole van der Kaay. The trio came into the finish as one but it was Hewitt with the leg speed to grab gold on the line at the 2018 Glenelg OTU Sprint Triathlon Oceania Cup

It was a repeat performance in the men’s race with the Kiwi’s again having the better kick as Same Ward took line honours from Copeland and Tony Dodds.

It was a day for sprint finishes, red hot racing and the display of the Trans-Tasman rivalry 🇦🇺🇳🇿 at its best at the OTU Continental Cup and Race 2 of the Australian Youth Junior & U23 Series at Glenelg.

With all three podium place getters in the women's event having already booked their ticket aboard Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the ladies proved that the first medal to be handed out in April is not one that is going to be won easily.

In the women's field, it was Emma Jeffcoat who lead out of the beach swim and for the majority of the ride, with Gillian Backhouse also working alone just behind her, but the two lone Australians weren't able to hold off the chasing pack who caught them in the final lap.

In the Youth & Junior Divisions, Triathlon Western Australia proved they are the State to beat, with the first Aussies over the line in the Junior and Youth A male and female categories thanks to Luke Bate, Taylor Kroyer and Daniel Kempson however it was NZ competitor, Hannah Knighton who took line honours from Jessica Claxton in the Junior Division. In the Youth B division Lani Bennett and Jackson Medway took the top podiums spots.
