Slater and Godfrey grab Cross Tri world championship gold in Fyn

Australia’s Penny Slater and Justin Godfrey have successfully defended their world crowns at the ITU Fyn Multisport World Championships in Denmark overnight.

Slater, the 22-year-old Canberra University student was a comfortable winner in the Under 23 Cross Triathlon (1km swim:40km bike:10km run), finishing seventh in the Elites overall in a time of 2hrs 35.05 minutes.

She is coached by former Cross Triathlon World Champion Jacqui Allen and showed all the attributes of a young woman with a bright future in the Cross Triathlon world.

While Albury’s father of two Justin Godfrey showed why he has no peers in the world of Cross Paratriathlon with his second title - his third career world championship, conquering the tough Svendborg course (500m swim; 15.2km bike; 5.2km run) in 1hr 29.35 mins.

It follows Slater and Godfrey’s category wins in last year’s Multisport Championships in Penticton and Godfrey’s win in Crackenback three years ago.

Slater, the Bachelor of Secondary Education and Exercise Physiology student, was a commanding winner over Russia’s Daria Rogozina (2:39.03) and South Africa’s Mikaela Jonsson (2:48.26).

It follows her back-to-back victories in the Australian Cross Triathlon Championships, capping an outstanding year for Slater, who also works part time in a Canberra butcher shop and as a teachers aide, as she builds her sponsorship base.

Godfrey, 44, again showed why he is one of Australia’s truly remarkable parasportsmen, who only has one gear “flat out.”

“I absolutely gave it all today,” Godfrey said.

“The course was challenging to say the least.

“I’m thrilled to come away with the overall Para category gold.

“I have to pay tribute to my wife and daughters for once again providing a fantastic pre race talk.”

Godfrey will now set his sights on the ITU World Paratriathlon Championships on the Gold Coast in September.
